Built in 1909, the Sheraton Gunter Hotel once served cattle and oil barons. Renovated in August 2006, today's guests enjoy its updated amenities, such as a fitness center and outdoor pool, along with its atmosphere of a bygone era. The lobby features antique furnishings, crystal chandeliers, the original switchboard, and even a photo of Tom Mix, the Western star, checking in on his horse.

The fitness center has a selection of cardio equipment and a weight machine. An outdoor pool and spa tub are surrounded by a courtyard with views of the city.

Barron's serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. McLeod's is open each evening for drinks and hot hors d'oeuvres, and offers a large-screen TV. Gunter Bakery provides fresh baked goods.

Location:
Across the street from the Majestic Theater and the Riverwalk, this 1909 hotel once served cattle and oil barons; the Alamo is four blocks away.

Rooms:
This nine-story San Antonio hotel has 322 guestrooms. All rooms offer the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds with custom-designed, plush-top mattress sets with fleece blankets, plump duvets, and five down pillows.

Rooms have city views, high ceilings, antique-style furnishings, comfortable chairs with ottomans, desks, 25-inch TVs with HBO and other premium channels, pay movies, and Nintendo video games. Wireless and high-speed Internet access is available for a fee.

All guestrooms are nonsmoking.

Dining:
ron's - Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lunch includes a fresh pasta bar and a salad bar with soup and a selection of the restaurant's own baked breads. Dinner specialties include grilled Norwegian salmon.

McLeod's - The hotel's Victorian pub has leaded-glass windows, a large oak bar with brass railings, and red leather stools. Open each evening for drinks and hot hors d'oeuvres, it offers a large-screen TV.

Sheraton Gunter Bakery - This bakery has been turning out its own fresh baked goods for decades, and a Seattle's Best Coffee bar is a recent addition. Items include croissants, cheesecake, and chocolate-covered strawberries.

Built in 1999, this hotel is an elegant addition to the Riverwalk. Giant candelabra light the handsome lobby—a blend of white marble and Texas limestone. Public areas hold a gallery of paintings, photographs, sculptures, and antiques, including centuries-old tapestries and a 200-year-old Mexican chandelier. Comfortable seating areas give vacationers and business travelers views of the river. This is an entirely nonsmoking hotel.

The 24-hour fitness center provides locker rooms, strength-training equipment, free weights, and an array of cardio machines. Guests can step outside to the terrace pool and seasonal poolside bar overlooking the Riverwalk. Spa services are available upon request. Meeting spaces are available for business and social gatherings of 10-800 people. Wireless Internet access in the lobby area is complimentary.

The completely nonsmoking Westin-Riverwalk offers a Japanese Meditation Garden. which is a tranquil respite for guests. Located outside the hotel by the river, it features traditional Japanese trees such as maples, yews, and black pines, and has a lovely weeping rock fountain, stone bench, and Japanese lantern.

Down one corridor of the hotel are river-view loggias—quiet, intimate spaces reminiscent of Italian balconies. Guests are welcome to read, enjoy morning coffee, or just watch the comings and goings along the Riverwalk. The loggias can be reserved for small gatherings and events.

Rooms:
This 14-story hotel offers 473 guestrooms, all of which include The Heavenly Bed. The Heavenly Bed consists of a custom-designed, foot-thick pillowtop mattress with all-white bedding; triple sheeting; down blanket, comforter and duvet; and five pillows. Many rooms overlook the Riverwalk. All rooms have marble-topped desks, chenille-upholstered reading chairs, ottomans, and regional artwork and photography.

The oversized marble-tiled Heavenly Bath consists of a dual showerhead with multiple spray options; curved shower rod for extra room; white-on-white shower curtain; velour, waffle-weave bathrobes; oversized Brazilian combed-cotton bath towels; and citrus-scented Molton Brown English toiletries.

High-speed Internet access (surcharge) is provided, as are multi-line phones with voice mail, in-room safes, minibars, and nightly turndown service. The hotel also offers The Heavenly Crib and The Heavenly Dog Bed.

Dining:
Caliza Grille - All-day dining in this Spanish-Mediterranean-style restaurant with seating inside or on the patio by the river. Latino cuisine. Breakfast buffet. Open daily from early morning until late evening.

Rincon de Maria - Sophisticated lobby bar offering a wide variety of tequilas and specialty margaritas poured tableside. Tapas menu. Open daily from mid-afternoon until late evening.

El Cafeto Bakery - Freshly baked goods and specialty coffees available all day. Also serves fresh fruit, bagels, gourmet coffee, and desserts. Open from early morning until late evening.

Pool Bar - Open seasonally, serving cocktails, beer, and wine poolside. Open weekends, hours vary.
